STEPS TO MILES · 17,000 STEPS

How many miles is 17000 steps?

17,000 steps is about 7.34 to 9.04 miles (11.82 to 14.55 km) of steady walking. A 5 ft 4 in woman walking a 20-minute mile covers 7.34 miles in 17,000 steps, and a 5 ft 10 in man walking a 15-minute mile covers 9.04. On a whole-day count, everyday living accounts for 5,000 to 6,000 steps for US adults, according to the 2008 study's authors, which leaves 11,000 to 12,000 steps of walking: 4.75 to 6.38 miles for those two walkers. At 20:00 per mile, 7.34 miles takes 2:26:54. That is a step of 27.4 in (69.5 cm). Steps per mile (walking, women, 5 ft 4 in): 1,949 + 63.4 × 20.00 − 14.1 × 64 = 2,314.6. 17,000 ÷ 2,314.6 = 7.34 miles.

17,000 steps in miles by height and pace

Across the heights and paces below, 17,000 steps is 7.17 to 9.47 miles of walking and 8.51 to 14.09 miles of running. Every walking figure is longer than a 10K (6.21 miles), and the longest, 9.47 miles, stops 3.64 miles short of a half marathon (13.11 miles). Each cell is 17,000 divided by the steps per mile from Hoeger and colleagues' 2008 equations, with separate walking equations for women and men and one running equation for both.

How long 17,000 steps takes to walk

For the four walkers below, 17,000 steps takes about 2 hours 8 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes (2:07:39 to 2:34:45 in the table). Time is miles × pace, and a 20-minute mile is 3 mph while a 15-minute mile is 4 mph. A taller walker covers more miles in the same 17,000 steps, so at the same pace they take longer to finish them.

17,000 steps for a woman

For a 5 ft 4 in woman, 17,000 steps is 7.34 miles (11.8 km) at an easy 20-minute mile and 8.51 miles (13.7 km) at a brisk 15-minute mile. Across the women's walking table above it runs from 7.17 miles (5 ft 0 in, 20-minute mile) to 9.02 miles (6 ft 0 in, 15-minute mile). The study found women took more steps per mile than men at the same walking pace, which is why it gives them their own equation.

17,000 steps in one day

If 5,000 to 6,000 of your 17,000 steps came from everyday living, the other 11,000 to 12,000 were steady walking. For the 5 ft 4 in woman at a 20-minute mile, those walking steps alone come to 4.75 to 5.18 miles (1:35:03 to 1:43:41 of walking), before the distance from her everyday steps. For the 5 ft 10 in man at a 15-minute mile, the walking part alone is 5.85 to 6.38 miles (1:27:46 to 1:35:45). Tudor-Locke and Bassett's 2004 step index says people who take more than 12,500 steps a day are likely to class as highly active, its top band.

Where these numbers come from

These distances use the height and pace equations from Hoeger and colleagues' 2008 study of 44 adults walking and 34 running a mile on a treadmill, with every step counted by a pedometer. The authors say the equations apply to people of normal weight. Steps taken slower than a 20-minute mile, such as pottering at home, are outside what the study tested, and probably cover less ground. The method, the step-length option and the study's limits are on the steps to miles calculator page. This is distance arithmetic only, not medical or training advice.
