SUB-25 5K · 5:00 PER KM · 8:03 PER MILE
25-minute 5K pace
A 25:00 5K is exactly 5:00 per km, or 8:02.8 per mile (7.46 mph, 12 km/h on a treadmill). Running 5:00 per km lands on 25:00, not under it; to break 25 minutes, hold 4:59 per km (24:55) or 8:02 per mile (24:57). The 8:03 per mile most charts print takes 25:00.6, just over 25 minutes.
Why “8:03 per mile” is not sub-25
We read the top 5 US results for “25 minute 5k pace” on 25 September 2026. Four of them, and Google's AI summary, give 8:03 per mile as the pace for a sub-25 5K; over 3.1069 miles it takes 25:00.6. Only one chart shows 8:02. None gives a separate time for the final 0.1069 mile (about 52 seconds), lists the treadmill speed or cites a source for its “average 5K time”. The splits below add up to exactly 25:00, and the comparison uses parkrun's own published data.
Splits for a 25:00 5K
Even pacing holds one pace from start to finish. The negative plan starts 2% slower than average and finishes 2% quicker, so the first half takes 12:38 and the second 12:22. The 2% is this site's illustrative preset, not a coaching prescription. Both plans reach 25:00 to the second.

Whole-second paces that break 25:00
Watches and pace charts show whole seconds, and the one that looks right can land just over the goal. The highlighted row is the slowest pace per mile that finishes under 25:00. The row below it, 8:03, is the exact average rounded to the nearest second, and it misses.

If your watch reads long
Courses are measured along the shortest route a runner could take, so most runners cover a little more and their GPS watch shows more distance than the course. The finish clock counts only the course. This is the watch pace that still gets you under 25:00 on the clock:
| Reads long | Watch shows | Watch /mi | Watch /km |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 5.00 km | 8:02 | 4:59 |
| 0.5% | 5.02 km | 8:00 | 4:58 |
| 1% | 5.05 km | 7:58 | 4:57 |
| 1.5% | 5.07 km | 7:55 | 4:55 |
| 2% | 5.10 km | 7:53 | 4:54 |
Printable pace band for 25:00
The band below lists even splits every km. Print this page with Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) and only the band prints: a 40 × 240 mm strip with a 50 mm ruler to check the scale. For negative splits, run/walk or a different split spacing, open the pace band generator with 25:00 filled in.
Print at 100% (Actual size) with headers and footers off. The strip is 40 × 240 mm. Measure the 50 mm ruler before cutting; if it is not 50 mm, your printer rescaled the page. Tape it loosely around your wrist.

How a 25-minute 5K compares
In a published survey of 45,662 UK parkrunners matched to their parkrun results (Haake, Quirk and Bullas, 2022), the median runner's average 5 km time was 29:20. A 25:00 5K is more than four minutes quicker than that. The same study called runners averaging under 20 minutes “front runners”; for that goal, see sub-20 5K pace.
Riegel's formula links a 25:00 5K to these longer races, and for distances up to the half marathon it held up in recreational runners (Vickers and Vertosick, 2016):
| Race | Equivalent time | Pace /mi |
|---|---|---|
| 10K | 52:07 | 8:23 |
| Half marathon | 1:55:00 | 8:46 |
| Marathon | 3:59:47 | 9:09 |
Common sub-25 mistakes
- Running exactly 5:00 per km. It finishes in 25:00.0, which is not sub-25. You need about a second per km in hand.
- Running 8:03 per mile. It takes 25:00.6, so use 8:02.
- Planning 3.1 miles. 5 km is 3.1069 miles; the last 0.1069 mile is about 52 seconds of running after the 3-mile marker.
- A fast first kilometre. The negative plan runs km 1 in 5:05 and the last km in 4:55; the even plan holds 5:00 all the way.
Plan a different goal
The 5K pace chart lists every goal from the fastest times to walking pace, and the race pace calculator with 25:00 filled in adjusts the splits to any finish time.
