Sub-20 5K pace
A 20:00 5K is exactly 4:00 per km, 6:26.2 per mile or 96 seconds per 400 m lap (9.32 mph, 15 km/h). Holding 4:00 per km or running 96-second laps lands on 20:00, not under it. To break 20 minutes, run 3:59 per km (19:55) or 6:26 per mile (19:59); 6:27 per mile finishes in 20:02.
“4:00 per km” is 20:00, not sub-20
We read the top US results for “sub 20 5k pace” on 25 September 2026: four text pages and one video. Google's AI summary says 4:00 per km gives 19:59, but that pace gives 20:00.0. Another top page says to run “at or slightly faster than” 4:00 per km, and the top chart repeats 4:00 for every kilometre. None gives a track lap table for the goal, the final 0.1069 mile as its own split, or the treadmill speed. This page has all three, plus what parkrun's published data says about who runs under 20 minutes.
Splits for a 20:00 5K
Even pacing holds one pace from start to finish. The negative plan starts 2% slower than average and finishes 2% quicker, so the first half takes 10:06 and the second 9:54. The 2% is this site's illustrative preset, not a coaching prescription. Both plans reach 20:00 to the second.

Whole-second paces that break 20:00
Watches and pace charts show whole seconds, and the one that looks right can land just over the goal. The highlighted row is the slowest pace per mile that finishes under 20:00. Here the exact average rounded to the nearest second, 6:26, is also the safe pace.

If your watch reads long
Courses are measured along the shortest route a runner could take, so most runners cover a little more and their GPS watch shows more distance than the course. The finish clock counts only the course. This is the watch pace that still gets you under 20:00 on the clock:
| Reads long | Watch shows | Watch /mi | Watch /km |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 5.00 km | 6:26 | 3:59 |
| 0.5% | 5.02 km | 6:24 | 3:58 |
| 1% | 5.05 km | 6:22 | 3:57 |
| 1.5% | 5.07 km | 6:20 | 3:56 |
| 2% | 5.10 km | 6:18 | 3:55 |
Printable pace band for 20:00
The band below lists even splits every km. Print this page with Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) and only the band prints: a 40 × 240 mm strip with a 50 mm ruler to check the scale. For negative splits, run/walk or a different split spacing, open the pace band generator with 20:00 filled in.
Print at 100% (Actual size) with headers and footers off. The strip is 40 × 240 mm. Measure the 50 mm ruler before cutting; if it is not 50 mm, your printer rescaled the page. Tape it loosely around your wrist.

How rare is a sub-20 5K?
Rarer than it sounds. In the survey of 45,662 UK parkrunners published by Haake, Quirk and Bullas (2022), the median runner averaged 29:20, and those averaging under 20 minutes were a separate group the authors called “front runners”. Women made up 4.2% of that group, compared with 51.5% of the whole sample, so sub-20 is especially uncommon among women at parkrun.
Riegel's formula links a sub-20 5K to these times:
| Race | Equivalent time | Pace /mi |
|---|---|---|
| 10K | 41:42 | 6:43 |
| Half marathon | 1:32:00 | 7:01 |
| Marathon | 3:11:49 | 7:19 |
Vickers and Vertosick (2016) found the formula reliable for recreational runners up to the half marathon, but its marathon predictions were at least 10 minutes too fast for half of them, so the marathon row is a best case, not a forecast.
Common sub-20 mistakes
- 96-second laps. They are exactly 20:00. Run 95-second laps (19:47) to leave room for the start and the last 100 m.
- Holding 4:00 per km on the watch. That is also 20:00. Hold 3:59 and you finish in 19:55.
- The first kilometre in 3:45. That is 19 seconds quicker than the negative plan's 4:04, and the plan needs no banked time: it finishes the last km in 3:56.
- Planning 3.1 miles. The final 0.1069 mile takes about 41 seconds at sub-20 pace.
Plan a different goal
The 5K pace chart lists every goal from the fastest times to walking pace, and the race pace calculator with 20:00 filled in adjusts the splits to any finish time.
