3:30:00 MARATHON · 8:00 PER MILE · 4:58 PER KM
3:30 marathon pace
A 3:30:00 marathon averages 8:00.6 per mile or 4:58.6 per km. To finish under 3:30, hold 8:00 per mile (finishing in 3:29:45) or 4:58 per km (3:29:34). The paces most charts print both miss: 8:01 per mile finishes in 3:30:11 and 5:00 per km in 3:30:58.
The 3:30 pace most pages get wrong
We read the top 5 US results for “3 30 marathon pace” on 25 September 2026. The top-ranking chart's headline says to hold 8:01 per mile, which finishes in 3:30:11; three others round to “5 minutes per kilometre”, which finishes in 3:30:58. None shows the final 0.2188 mi as its own split, a negative-split plan with numbers, or speed for the treadmill (7.49 mph, 12.06 km/h). The tables below add up to 3:30:00 to the second, and the pace table shows which whole-second paces get you under.
Splits for a 3:30:00 marathon
Even pacing holds one pace from start to finish. The negative plan starts 2% slower than average and finishes 2% quicker, so the first half takes 1:46:03 and the second 1:43:57. The 2% is this site's illustrative preset, not a coaching prescription. Both plans reach 3:30:00 to the second.

Whole-second paces that break 3:30:00
Watches and pace charts show whole seconds, and the one that looks right can land just over the goal. The highlighted row is the slowest pace per mile that finishes under 3:30:00. The row below it, 8:01, is the exact average rounded to the nearest second, and it misses.

If your watch reads long
Courses are measured along the shortest route a runner could take, so most runners cover a little more and their GPS watch shows more distance than the course. The finish clock counts only the course. This is the watch pace that still gets you under 3:30:00 on the clock:
| Reads long | Watch shows | Watch /mi | Watch /km |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 26.22 mi | 8:00 | 4:58 |

| 1.5% | 26.61 mi | 7:53 | 4:54 |

Printable pace band for 3:30:00
The band below lists even splits every mile. Print this page with Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) and only the band prints: a 40 × 240 mm strip with a 50 mm ruler to check the scale. For negative splits, run/walk or a different split spacing, open the pace band generator with 3:30:00 filled in.
Print at 100% (Actual size) with headers and footers off. The strip is 40 × 240 mm. Measure the 50 mm ruler before cutting; if it is not 50 mm, your printer rescaled the page. Tape it loosely around your wrist.

Training associated with a 3:30 marathon
Tanda (2011) followed 22 runners through 46 marathons between 2:47 and 3:36 and predicted marathon pace from two numbers: average weekly distance and average training pace over the 8 weeks before the race (7 to 63 days out). His formula predicted finish times with a standard error of about 4 minutes. For a 3:30:00 goal, it gives these combinations:
| Km a week | Miles a week | Training /km | Training /mi |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45 | 28 | 5:11 | 8:21 |
| 50 | 31 | 5:17 | 8:29 |
| 55 | 34 | 5:22 | 8:38 |
| 60 | 37 | 5:27 | 8:46 |
Read it as a trade-off: the more you run each week, the slower your average training runs can be for the same 3:30 prediction. Above about 60 km a week, the required average training pace falls outside the range in Tanda's sample, so the table stops there. The formula comes from a small, almost all-male group on flat courses; treat it as a check on your training log, not a promise.
3:30 and Boston
3:30:00 is a Boston qualifying standard for women and non-binary athletes aged 35 to 39 and men aged 55 to 59 (2027 and 2028 races). Qualifying only lets you apply: in 2026 accepted runners were 4:34 or more under their standard, which here means 3:25:26 (7:50 per mile). The Boston qualifying times page lists every age group with its pace.
Common 3:30 marathon mistakes
- Running “5:00 per km”. It sounds like 3:30 but finishes 58 seconds over. The whole-second pace is 4:58.
- Reading the wrong clock. The race clock starts with the gun; your result counts from when you cross the start line. In a big race the two can be minutes apart, so check your band against the time since you crossed the line.
- Not planning the last 10 km. Allen and colleagues (2017) found 21.5% more finishers in the minute before 3:30 than in the minute after, so many 3:30 attempts are decided in the final kilometres. The negative plan goes through 20 miles slightly behind even pace instead of relying on time banked early.
- Pacing off the watch. A watch that reads 1% long must show 7:55 per mile for a sub-3:30 on the clock.
Plan a different goal
The marathon pace chart lists every goal from the fastest times to walking pace, and the split calculator with 3:30:00 filled in adjusts the splits to any finish time.
