RUN/WALK CALCULATOR · ANY DISTANCE
Run/walk calculator
Your average run/walk pace is the time of one run-and-walk cycle divided by the distance it covers. Running for 4 minutes at 6:00 per km and walking for 1 minute at 12:00 per km covers 0.75 km per 5-minute cycle. That works out to 6:40 per km and a marathon finish of 4:41:10. Enter your own intervals and paces below, or start from a goal time to get the full schedule.
Whole run minutes from 1 to 60 and whole walk seconds from 1 to 3600. The cycle repeats from the start, and the last cycle stops at the finish.
Each cycle of 4:00 running and 1:00 walking covers 0.750 km at your paces. This finish time is worked out from those paces over the full marathon (42.195 km); it is not a prediction. Open this plan with checkpoints and a pace band.
The schedule runs from the start gun to the finish time calculated from your paces.

The goal time does not divide evenly by the cycle, so the final cycle stops at 4:41:10 instead of inventing time beyond the finish. In the final cycle the run comes first; the walk gets whatever time is left, so it is the walk that gets shortened.
The whole schedule, not just a finish time
We checked the top 5 US and UK results for “run walk calculator” on 24 September 2026. They return a finish time or a blended pace, but none lists each cycle, the partial cycle at the end, or how much of the race is running versus walking. A 4:00:00 marathon with a 4-minute run and 1-minute walk is exactly 48 cycles: 3:12:00 running and 0:48:00 walking. One calculator in the top 5 also calculates the required running pace incorrectly, giving 11:00 per mile for a 12:00 average pace even though the correct answer for those inputs is 11:17.6.
How the calculation works
- Distance per cycle = run seconds ÷ run pace + walk seconds ÷ walk pace (240 ÷ 360 + 60 ÷ 720 = 0.75 km in the example).
- Full cycles = race distance ÷ distance per cycle, rounded down (42.195 ÷ 0.75 = 56 full cycles, 42 km in 4:40:00).
- The last 0.195 km falls inside a run interval, so it takes 0.195 × 360 = 70.2 s. Finish: 4:41:10.
- Average pace = finish time ÷ distance. The finish can land in a run or a walk; the calculator handles both.
In goal-time mode the tool works the other way: it schedules your intervals from the start gun to your goal time. In the final cycle the run comes first, and the walk gets whatever time is left before the finish. The checkpoint splits and the pace band include the walk breaks.
Limits
The result is only as good as the paces you enter; the calculator does not know your fitness, the course or the weather, and walk breaks at aid stations are not modelled. Planned walk breaks are a long-established approach; Jeff Galloway's run/walk method is the best-known version. This tool is independent and does not recommend a ratio.
