5-hour marathon pace
Five hours over 42.195 km averages 11:26.5 per mile or 7:06.6 per km. To finish under 5:00:00, hold 11:26 per mile (4:59:46) or 7:06 per km (4:59:35). The 11:27-per-mile pace quoted almost everywhere finishes in 5:00:12, and 7:07 per km finishes in 5:00:17.
The 11:27 problem
We read the top 5 US results for “5 hour marathon pace” on 25 September 2026. Four of them and Google's AI summary give 11:27 per mile as the pace for five hours; held for 26.2188 miles it is 5:00:12. One lists 7:07 per km, which is 5:00:17, and one has a km split that goes backwards. Three recommend walk breaks, but none shows what run pace a walk-break plan needs to stay under five hours. The run/walk table below gives those paces, from this site's run/walk engine.
Splits for a 5:00:00 marathon
Even pacing holds one pace from start to finish. The negative plan starts 2% slower than average and finishes 2% quicker, so the first half takes 2:31:30 and the second 2:28:30. The 2% is this site's illustrative preset, not a coaching prescription. Both plans reach 5:00:00 to the second.

Whole-second paces that break 5:00:00
Watches and pace charts show whole seconds, and the one that looks right can land just over the goal. The highlighted row is the slowest pace per mile that finishes under 5:00:00. The row below it, 11:27, is the exact average rounded to the nearest second, and it misses.

If your watch reads long
Courses are measured along the shortest route a runner could take, so most runners cover a little more and their GPS watch shows more distance than the course. The finish clock counts only the course. This is the watch pace that still gets you under 5:00:00 on the clock:
| Reads long | Watch shows | Watch /mi | Watch /km |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 26.22 mi | 11:26 | 7:06 |
| 0.5% | 26.35 mi | 11:23 | 7:04 |

| 1.5% | 26.61 mi | 11:16 | 7:00 |

Printable pace band for 5:00:00
The band below lists even splits every mile. Print this page with Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) and only the band prints: a 40 × 240 mm strip with a 50 mm ruler to check the scale. For negative splits, run/walk or a different split spacing, open the pace band generator with 5:00:00 filled in.
Print at 100% (Actual size) with headers and footers off. The strip is 40 × 240 mm. Measure the 50 mm ruler before cutting; if it is not 50 mm, your printer rescaled the page. Tape it loosely around your wrist.

Five hours with walk breaks
Many 5-hour runners walk on purpose, often in a fixed rhythm. The walk is slower than the goal pace, so the running has to be faster. If you walk at 16:00 per mile, the table shows the slowest whole-second running pace that still finishes under 5:00:00, as worked out by the run/walk calculator's engine:
| Run / walk | Run pace /mi | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| 4:00 run / 1:00 walk | 10:40 | 4:59:30 |
| 3:00 run / 1:00 walk | 10:26 | 4:59:27 |
| 2:00 run / 1:00 walk | 10:00 | 4:59:30 |
| 1:00 run / 0:30 walk | 10:00 | 4:59:30 |
Walk faster and the running can be easier; walk slower and it has to be quicker. Enter your own paces in the run/walk calculator, and print a run/walk band from the pace band generator.
How realistic is a five-hour marathon?
In 9,789,093 marathon finishes from 1970 to 2013, the average was 4:26:33, and finish times bunch just under 5:00 as they do under every round hour (Allen and colleagues, 2017). Training volume matters more than anything a pace chart can tell you: among 2,303 recreational runners, running 50 rather than 30 miles a week was associated with marathon times 25:32 faster for men and 31:41 faster for women (Vickers and Vertosick, 2016).
Common 5-hour marathon mistakes
- Holding 11:27. It is 12 seconds over. Use 11:26 per mile, or 7:06 per km.
- Walk breaks that are not in the plan. An unplanned walk through each aid station costs time that your running pace does not make up. If you plan to walk, set the rhythm in advance and follow the running pace in the table above.
- Banking time. Running the first five miles at 10:30 per mile puts you about 4:43 ahead of even pace, a lead you then have to protect while running the next 21 miles at 11:26 per mile. You do not need it: the negative plan above runs the first half in 2:31:30, 1:30 slower than even pace.
- Trusting the watch. A watch reading 1% long must show 11:19 per mile for a sub-5:00 on the clock.
Plan a different goal
The marathon pace chart lists every goal from the fastest times to walking pace, and the split calculator with 5:00:00 filled in adjusts the splits to any finish time.
